What to Expect During a Professional Roof Replacement

A roof replacement is one of the largest home improvement projects you’ll undertake. For many homeowners in Roseville and the Sacramento area, it’s also one they’ve never been through before. Knowing what the process looks like — from first call to final walkthrough — makes everything less stressful. Here’s exactly what to expect when you hire Clark’s Gables Roofing.

Step 1: Free Estimate and Material Selection

It starts with a free inspection and estimate. A Clark’s Gables estimator will walk your roof, inspect the attic if accessible, photograph any damaged areas, and measure your roof’s square footage. You’ll receive a detailed written estimate with material options and pricing.

This is your chance to ask questions — about shingle grades, color options, warranty terms, and timeline. Never feel rushed during this step.

Step 2: Scheduling and Permits

Once you accept the proposal and sign a contract, we handle the permit process with the City of Roseville or your local municipality. California law requires permits for roof replacements in most jurisdictions. A reputable contractor pulls permits — if a contractor suggests skipping this step, walk away.

We’ll confirm your installation date and give you a few days’ notice before the crew arrives.

Step 3: Pre-Installation Prep (What You Should Do)

The day before installation, there are a few things you can do to make the process smoother:

  • Move vehicles out of the driveway and away from the house
  • Cover or move any fragile items on patios or decks
  • Let your neighbors know — roof work is noisy
  • Secure any loose items in the attic (vibration from nail guns shakes things loose)
  • Keep pets indoors or secure away from the work area

Step 4: Tear-Off Day

The crew arrives early — typically 7:00–7:30am. They set up protective tarps around the perimeter of your home to catch debris, then begin removing your old roofing material down to the deck. This is the loudest part of the job.

Once stripped, the deck is inspected for rot or damage. Any compromised boards are replaced before new underlayment goes down.

Step 5: New Roof Installation

New underlayment (the moisture barrier beneath the shingles or tile) is installed first, followed by drip edge, flashings, and finally the shingles or tile. Depending on roof size and complexity, most residential re-roofs in the Sacramento area are completed in 1–3 days.

Step 6: Cleanup and Final Inspection

At the end of each day, and again at project completion, the crew sweeps the entire property with magnetic nail rollers to collect fasteners. Tarps are collected and debris hauled away. Your driveway and landscaping should be left as clean as they were before we arrived — we take this seriously.

A final walkthrough is done with you present to confirm everything meets your expectations and the project specifications.

Step 7: Permit Inspection and Warranty Documentation

The city inspector will conduct a final inspection to confirm code compliance. Once approved, you receive your warranty documentation — both the manufacturer’s material warranty and Clark’s Gables Roofing’s workmanship warranty.

How Long Does It Take?

Most residential roof replacements in the Roseville area take 1–3 days of active work, plus a week or two for scheduling and permitting. Emergency repairs can often be expedited.
