Here’s how to protect it.
Understanding How Homes Ignite During Wildfires
Most homes in the path of a wildfire don’t ignite from direct flame contact. They ignite from embers — burning material carried on the wind that can travel more than a mile ahead of a fire front. These embers land on roofs, in gutters clogged with debris, and in gaps around roof vents and eaves. Your roof’s fire resistance and your maintenance habits directly affect your home’s survival odds.
Step 1: Know Your Roof’s Fire Rating
Roofing materials are rated A, B, or C — Class A offering the highest fire resistance:
- Class A: Clay tile, concrete tile, metal roofing, Class A-rated asphalt shingles. These resist severe fire exposure.
- Class B: Some treated wood shingles. Moderate fire resistance.
- Class C: Untreated wood shakes. Minimal fire resistance.
If you live in Roseville’s Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) zones — neighborhoods bordering open space or hills — local building codes may require Class A roofing. If your home has an older wood shake roof, replacing it with a Class A material significantly reduces your fire risk.
Step 2: Clear Your Gutters — Every Year

Open eave gaps — common in older home construction — create direct pathways for embers into the attic or wall cavity. Boxed (enclosed) soffits with intumescent or ember-resistant venting dramatically reduce this risk. This is a worthwhile upgrade during a roof replacement.
Step 5: Maintain Clearance Around Roof Edges
Tree branches that overhang or contact your roof create both a fire pathway and a debris collection point. Trim branches to maintain at least 10 feet of clearance from your roofline. Oak and pine trees are beautiful Sacramento Valley staples — they just need to be managed near the home.
Step 6: Consider a Roof Inspection After Fire Season
Even without a major fire event, smoke and ash exposure can accelerate shingle weathering and deposit acidic material on your roof surface. An annual inspection after fire season catches any developing issues early.
